Analysis of the temporal occurrence of goals in Champions League matches between the 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018 seasons
Abstract
Introduction: Field football is a sport practiced worldwide, being the goal that differentiates the success between the teams, but the study of the temporal occurrence of goals at the end of Champions League matches and the comparison between seasons is not much approached in the literature. Objective: The objective of the study is to analyze the incidence of goals in Champions League matches of the 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 seasons. Materials and Methods: A total of 125 matches from each of the aforementioned Champions League seasons were analyzed and taken from the Union European Football Associations (UEFA)® official website (https://en.uefa.com/), followed by Goal moment data were divided into 6 15-minute periods, totaling 90 minutes in total, taking into account the goals scored in the late-half and second-half increments, respectively. Descriptive statistics and Kruskal Wallis test were performed. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 25.0, with the significance level set at 5%. Results: The results show that there was a significant difference in the incidence of goals only in the Champions League matches 2015/2016 (p=0.029) and in the knockout phase of the 2016/2017 season (p=0.018). Conclusion: It was concluded that there was a significant difference in the incidence of goals in the matches of the Champions League season 2015/2016 and in the knockout phase of the 2016/2017 season.
