Abstract

Currently, several futsal competitions are organized into categories by date of birth. Children and adolescents born in the same year are grouped in the same age category and therefore may have advantages in children born in the first months of the year in relation to children born in the last months of the year. This phenomenon is known as relative age effect (RAE). Futsal has become one of the most practiced sports in the world and due to the number of practitioners and the competitiveness, it is possible to create the hypothesis that there is the RAE in futsal athletes. The present study aimed to evaluate the RAE on male and female athletes participating in the Jogos Abertos of Santa Catarina (JASC). The birth dates of 848 athletes (23,18 ± 5,69) were analyzed, being 438 male athletes (25,17 ± 6,11) and 410 female athletes (21,06 ± 4,29). The Chi-square test was used to analyze the distribution of dates of birth by quartile of the year. Odds Ratio tests were used to identify effect size among quartiles. Among the results, we identified the effect of relative age in male futsal athletes while no relative age effect was identified in female futsal athletes. From the results found, concludes that there is a prevalence of male athletes born in the first months indicating the existence of the EIR, whereas the EIR has not been verified in female athletes.
