Impact of the first goal on the result of the matches in the brazilian championship and brazilian cup
Abstract
Introduction and Objective: Football is one of the most popular team sports worldwide and the most practiced in Brazil. Given this fact, it is crucial to understand the Brazilian soccer more deeply. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the first goal in matches of the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil (in the seasons of 2020 to 2022). Materials and Methods: The summaries of 1370 matches were analyzed, encompassing both championships of the mentioned seasons. Results: The documents analyzed revealed that the home team presented a higher percentage of victories. Discussion: The results are in line with findings in the literature, which indicate that the team scoring the first goal has a higher probability of achieving victory. This is primarily due to football dynamics, especially in the tactical context. Conclusion: Teams scoring the first goal in the first half showed a higher rate of victories in both competitions; we also found a significant difference in the influence of home field advantage (p<0.001) in Campeonato Brasileiro.
