Abstract

Women participation in football is becoming more frequent, however, we still find much less studies in the field of sports psychology compared to men. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe emotional and cognitive variables of women football players during a season. The sample consisted of 13 players (14.69 ± 0.95 years), belonging to a grassroots soccer team from state of São Paulo, Brazil. Five evaluations were applied covering the following aspects: emotional - anxiety and mood; Cognitive - attention and intellectual reasoning. Attention increased from the first to the 4 and 5 evaluations (p<0.001, p<0.001) and, intellectual reasoning increased from the first to the last evaluation (p=0.022). The emotional variables remained stable and the iceberg profile was presented by the athletes of the study in all 5 evaluations. The conclusion was that the cognitive abilities may have been influenced by the practice of football and the context of the competitions.
